Duck Farming
Introduction
Ducks are considered to be Asian bird.
In case of duck, male is called drakes and female is called as duck.
Ornamental ducks are used for exhibition purpose in zoological garden.
Nutritive value
•Nutritive value of duck meat as well as egg is higher than chicken meat.
•Duck egg contains 2% higher crude protein (Chicken egg contains crude protein (CP) level almost 12% whereas in case of duck it is 14%).
Weight of egg
•Weight of duck egg is higher than chicken ,it is almost 20 grams higher than chicken egg.
Production of eggs / numbers of eggs
•Its egg production is much higher ; it gives 322 eggs per year.
Marshy places
- Ducks can be maintained in marshy areas like river side where water level is high .
- Ducks are birds of water ; their natural habitat is to live in ponds and rivers .
Dual farming
•Ducks can be adapted as dual farming ,In which we maintain ducks near the fish farm. The fecal material of ducks can be used by the fish as it is,because it is an organic matter.
Feed/ FCR
•In case of laying duck almost 190 grams feed is consumed daily.
•In case of duck 27 kg feed is required upto the age of 24 weeks to be ready to laying eggs.
•Number of eggs is higher in the good strains of Indian runner.
•Storage of duck eggs is very important ;We cannot store the duck eggs more than one week if we store the eggs for longer period of time then they may be off -flavored .
•Egg storage room temperature is 13-15°C which is almost 57°F.
•FCR of layer duck is 4.0.
( Feed conversion ratio or feed conversion rate is a ratio or rate measuring of the efficiency with which the bodies of livestock convert animal feed into the desired output.)
